History & Development

PHX opened in 1935 and has grown significantly alongside the expansion of Phoenix as a major metropolitan area. Over time, the airport developed multiple terminals, but today operations are concentrated in Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 after major renovation projects. Terminal 3 was fully modernized in the 2020s, while Terminal 4 remains the largest and busiest hub, handling the majority of passenger traffic, including international flights.

Despite having only two terminals, distances inside PHX can be long—allow extra time for walking between gates, especially in Terminal 4.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is a modern, recently renovated facility designed for efficiency and comfort. It features a centralized security checkpoint and two concourses with spacious waiting areas, natural light, and updated amenities.

The terminal is spread across multiple levels: arrivals and baggage claim are located on the lower level, while departures and check-in counters are on the upper level. Gates are easily accessible after security, with clear signage throughout.

Facilities include free Wi-Fi, ATMs, charging stations, restaurants, and retail shops. There are also nursing rooms, pet relief areas, and accessible services for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM).

Terminal 3 is generally less crowded than Terminal 4, making it a good option if you prefer a calmer airport experience.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 is the largest and busiest terminal at PHX, serving as the primary hub for American Airlines and a major base for Southwest Airlines. It includes multiple concourses (A, B, C, and D) and handles both domestic and international flights.

The terminal is organized across several levels: Level 1 for arrivals and baggage claim, Level 2 for ticketing and check-in, and Level 3 for security checkpoints and access to gates. International arrivals are processed here, including customs and border control.

Terminal 4 offers the widest range of services, including duty-free shops, premium lounges, and a large selection of restaurants and cafés. It is also directly connected to the PHX Sky Train.

Walking distances between concourses can be significant—check your gate early and allow at least 15–20 minutes to reach it.

Facilities & Services

Both terminals provide essential services such as free Wi-Fi, ATMs, currency exchange, charging stations, and information desks. There are no luggage storage facilities at PHX.

Families benefit from nursing pods and play areas, while passengers with reduced mobility have access to assistance services, elevators, and accessible restrooms.

Security screening is centralized and generally efficient, but wait times can vary depending on the time of day. Tip: Early mornings and late afternoons tend to be the busiest periods.

Check-in, Security & Boarding

Check-in counters are located in the departures level of each terminal. Most airlines also offer self-service kiosks and mobile boarding options.

After security, passengers proceed to their assigned concourse. Boarding typically begins 30–45 minutes before departure for domestic flights and earlier for international services.

Use online check-in whenever possible to save time and avoid queues at the airport.

Lost & Found

Lost items can be reported to the Lost & Found office located in Terminal 3 (Level 7). This office handles items lost in terminals, parking areas, and the Sky Train system.

This modern train connects Terminal 3, Terminal 4, the Rental Car Center, East Economy Parking, and the Valley Metro Rail station at 44th Street & Washington, providing seamless mobility across the airport and into the city.

The service runs every 3 to 5 minutes, ensuring minimal waiting times even during peak hours. The trains are fully automated, air-conditioned, and designed with ample space for luggage, making them especially convenient for travelers with suitcases or families.

The PHX Sky Train is often faster than walking or driving between terminals, especially during busy periods or when parking areas are congested.
